Communication is key!

Smoke on the plane—and communication is unclear. This scenario shows that precise communication is more than just a soft skill. It is critical to safety.

Smoke alert on a Boeing 747 – what now?

You’re flying to Chicago with 436 passengers on your Boeing 747 when suddenly the “Smoke Lavatory Aft” warning lights up—smoke in the aft lavatory area! You immediately contact the flight attendants in the aft cabin: “We have a smoke alert from the aft lavatory. Do you see smoke there?” Response: “Yes, smoke is coming out of the lavatory door.” You reply: “Copy that, follow the Cabin Fire Procedure and prioritize your own safety.” You yourself work through the cockpit procedures for the warning and then check in by phone: “How has the smoke situation developed?” Response: “I can’t see anything back here anymore!”

Ambiguity as a Risk

So what does that mean? Is there no smoke to be seen anymore? Or is the smoke so thick that you can’t see a thing? Are your passengers safe, or aren’t they? Can you continue flying, or do you need to prepare for an emergency landing?

Why Communication Can Save Lives

This hypothetical example clearly illustrates that ambiguity in aviation is no trivial matter; rather, it poses a potential safety risk, especially in highly complex situations. That is why communication in the cockpit is highly regulated: clear structures, defined terms, standardized procedures, and strict radio discipline—leaving no room for misunderstandings. This contributes to aviation being safer than any other transportation system in the world. (Source on aviation safety)
